Protecting County Resources
Assemblyman Yee has led the charge to protect the County’s precious natural resources,
to improve access to education, to ensure all residents have adequate housing, and to
guarantee the County receives its fair share of state funding for essential services.

| Cleaned up San Mateo County Parks and Open Space. The natural
beauty of our local parks and beaches are too often degraded by unattended campfires,
illegal off-roading, or dumping of garbage, old furniture, or toxic materials. To
improve care and management of our local environment, Yee passed legislation allowing
districts to impose stiffer fines for these infractions and repair damage caused by
trail destruction, tree cutting, trash dumping, vandalism, and other illegal activity.
|
• |
| Helped Defend Our Local Coastline.Yee has been a leader
in protecting the coast by supporting anti-dumping legislation banning large ships
from releasing “gray-water” polluting materials into state waters and laws requiring
all oil produced from offshore facilities to be brought ashore by pipeline instead
of much more dangerous barges.

• |
| Protected County Funding. To guarantee San Mateo County can
offer its residents the services they deserve, Yee has fought to protect the revenue
that funds public safety, education, and other essential programs. Yee helped pass
legislation that puts revenue from vehicle licensing fees to work fighting San Mateo
County traffic congestion on streets and highways. And when a change of venue shifted
the Peterson trial to San Mateo County, Yee supported legislation to require counties
be reimbursed for the costs of a trial by the county of origin.

| Fought Plans for Offshore Drilling. When the Bush
administration sough to push through changes in federal law to open the California
coast for offshore drilling, Assemblyman Yee joined with a broad coalition of
environmental organizations to fight back. Yee authored the resolution officially
declaring California’s opposition to federal efforts to weaken the long-standing
federal off-shore drilling moratorium.

| Won Funds to Contain Contamination from Waste Tire Facilities.
Thanks to a $228,480 grant from the California Integrated Waste Management Board that
Yee helped secure, San Mateo County can better inspect and identify waste tire operations
that pose serious risks to the public and environment.

| Moved Critical Devil’s Slide Tunnel Project Forward.Yee was
instrumental in moving key legislation through the State Assembly to allow for the
building of the Devil’s Slide Tunnel along Highway 1, which avoided an alternate
highway project that would have paved over a pristine coastal creek. The project
will help end the rainy season delays and deadly accidents that annually plague the
“Devil's Slide” stretch of Highway 1.
