Pedestrian and Public Safety
In San Francisco, motor vehicle crashes are the second leading cause of injury
death after drug and other poisoning deaths. Pedestrians account for 49% of motor
vehicle deaths in San Francisco. 19th Avenue has registered 13 total deaths since
2000, including a 19-year old San Mateo County driver who was killed after street
racing in June. Even more recently, a 54-year old pedestrian was killed by a drunk
driver on August 16, 2006.
As a parent, community leader, Supervisor and in the State Assembly, Leland Yee
has long been one of the city’s strongest proponents for pedestrian and public
safety.
