Pedestrian and Public Safety

In San Francisco, motor vehicle crashes are the second leading cause of injury death after drug and other poisoning deaths. Pedestrians account for 49% of motor vehicle deaths in San Francisco. 19th Avenue has registered 13 total deaths since 2000, including a 19-year old San Mateo County driver who was killed after street racing in June. Even more recently, a 54-year old pedestrian was killed by a drunk driver on August 16, 2006.

As a parent, community leader, Supervisor and in the State Assembly, Leland Yee has long been one of the city’s strongest proponents for pedestrian and public safety.

Wrote Law to Slow Traffic on Deadly 19th Avenue Corridor. Law would have doubled fines for unlawful passing and overtaking, excessive speed, reckless driving, drunken driving, and other similar serious moving violations on 19th Avenue. Yee’s bill passed the Legislature but was vetoed by Governor Schwarzenegger

Fought Sex Trafficking and Child Prostitution by Increasing Penalties for Predators. Recent busts of human trafficking rings in San Francisco bring home the fact that 200,000 to 300,000 children are forced into prostitution nationwide. To protect children, Yee partnered with San Francisco District Attorney Kamala Harris to bring greater penalties for those who solicit child prostitutes and who engage in intrastate human trafficking

Pedestrian Safety Funding. Passed law in the State Assembly that would allow the San Francisco Board of Supervisors to adopt an ordinance to impose a local vehicle registration fee dedicated to road repair and pedestrian safety (vetoed by Governor)

Children’s Safety. Sponsored the Portola Neighborhood Children’s Safety and Health Town Hall to educate the public on safety issues, featuring presentations from the Polly Klaas Foundation, San Francisco Police Department, San Francisco Fire Department and other public safety organizations

Safety Awareness. Led effort with the San Francisco Police Department, the Council of District Merchants, and San Francisco S.A.F.E., Inc. (Safety Awareness for Everyone) to create a Safety Awareness Walk following the murder of a small business owner in the Sunset District

Added Police to Our Streets. Added 400 new Police Officers in two years, bringing San Francisco police force to full strength for the first time. Crime dropped a dramatic 20% in his district, the largest drop of any district in San Francisco

Protected our Firefighters. Put more firefighters on the street and dedicated $1.9 million to improve the safety of their uniforms

Ensured access to 911. Leland fought to make our 911 system serve multiple languages so that immigrants and non-English speaking families are equally protected

Combated hate crimes. Created task force to deal with hate crimes, vandalism and graffiti in his District, and held numerous town hall meetings with constituents to address the issue

Fought bridge tolls for pedestrians. Joined with the San Francisco Bicycle Coalition and Assemblyman Mark Leno to oppose the imposition of tolls for pedestrians or cyclists on Golden Gate Bridge
