Kids and Schools

A former teacher and PhD Child Psychologist, Leland Yee was elected to the School Board in 1988, served as President, and retired in 1996 after he was elected to Board of Supervisors. During his tenure, he was a strong voice for streamlining bureaucracy, raising standards in core curriculum, updating educational materials, and reducing class sizes.

As a Supervisor and in the State Assembly, Leland has continued to make kids and schools his first priority.

Lowered class sizes. On the School Board, Leland reduced class sizes, modernized textbooks and added more class time for our middle school kids

Built New Schools. Guided the rebuilding and opening of new Elementary Schools and prevented the closure of Newcomer High School

Opened School-based Family Services. Developed the pioneering “Integrated Services Model,” which opened schools in the day and evening to provide tutoring, adult education, child care, sports, counseling and health services for families

Founded Annual Parent Fair. Founded an annual Parent Fair that informs families about education and arts programs available in San Francisco

Champion of Family Day Care. Leland has worked tirelessly for many years to increase funding for childcare, expand family day care programs, as well as improve training and increase wages for day care providers.

Protected Children from Alcohol and Tobacco. Co-sponsored and passed law limiting tobacco advertising near schools and battled to ensure at least $1 million in annual funding went to youth tobacco education, prevention and control programs. Authored and passed a resolution to oppose the issuance of liquor licenses to businesses within 600 feet of a schools.

Fought for Youth Recreation. Won funding for youth recreation, opened gyms for basketball and secured new computers with Internet access for his District’s libraries.

Passed Family-focused Budget. As Finance Chair on the Board of Supervisors, passed a budget called “One of the best ever for children, youth and families.” (Coleman Advocates for Youth)
