Trades Workers Unite Behind Leland Yee as 1st Choice for Mayor

Yee Earns Support from Carpenters, Ironworkers, Operating Engineers, Painters, Roofers, and several other trades

SAN FRANCISCO – Carpenters, Ironworkers, Operating Engineers, Painters, Roofers, and other major trades unions today united behind Senator Leland Yee as their 1st choice in the race for Mayor. Yee has earned the endorsement of over two dozen trades groups including the San Francisco Building and Construction Trades Council.

“Leland Yee earned the endorsement of the San Francisco Building and Construction Trades Council because of his long-standing commitment to our city and our families,” said Ken Oku, District Representative for Operating Engineers, Local 3 and member of the San Francisco Building and Construction Trades Council.  “Leland will put jobs first and that is why we need his leadership in the mayor’s office.”

In addition to the Operating Engineers and the San Francisco Building and Construction Trades Council, Yee is also the 1st choice of the Laborers International Union (LiUNA) Local 261; IFPTE Local 21; Carpenters, Local 22; Teamsters Local 665; Teamsters Joint Council 7; Carpet Layers, Local 12; Cement Masons, Local 300, Area 580; International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW), Local 6; International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW), Local 1245; Elevator Constructors, Local 8; Glaziers, Local 718; Ironworkers - Field Local 377; Operating Engineers, Local 3; Painters & Tapers, Local 913; Roofers & Waterproofers, Local 40; Communications Workers of America 9410; International Longshore and Wearhouse Union (ILWU) Nor Cal District Council; and California State Association of Letter Carriers.

“I am proud to stand with San Francisco’s working families and I am honored to receive the support of so many trades,” said Yee.  “Together, we can help rejuvenate our city and our economy and provide good paying jobs for our working men and women.”

Yee has released 37-point plan to improve San Francisco’s economy and bring jobs back to the City. The plan contains specific commitments that Yee will embark on as Mayor, including small business development, creating clean energy jobs, incentivizing biotechnology, increasing tourism and nightlife, and protecting good-paying union jobs.  To read the full plan, visit LelandYee.com.

Fighting for working families has been a hallmark of Leland Yee’s public service.  For these efforts, Yee has received awards from the California Labor Federation, National Education Association, Coalition for San Francisco Neighborhoods, California Faculty Association, California Independent Grocers, Society of Certified Public Accountants, and the San Francisco Women’s Political Committee, among others.

Yee immigrated to San Francisco at the age of 3. His father, a veteran, served in the US Army and the Merchant Marine, and his mother was a local seamstress. Yee graduated from the University of California – Berkeley, then earned a Ph.D. in Child Psychology, and later served in various mental health and school settings. He and his wife, Maxine, have raised four children who all attended San Francisco public schools. Yee has served in the State Legislature, Board of Supervisors and Board of Education.
