Teacher, educator, Ph.D. Child Psychologist
Born in China, Leland Yee emigrated to America at age 3. Like many immigrants, Leland was taught by his parents that education
is the path to opportunity. Educated in public schools, Leland went on to earn his PhD in Child Psychology. Yee earned his
doctorate in Developmental Psychology and worked as a child therapist in the Children’s Division of the San Francisco Mental
Health Department.
A long time teacher and social worker, Leland’s own children attended San Francisco public schools. Concerned that all children
receive a quality education, Leland campaigned for school reform as a candidate for the San Francisco Board of Education.
Elected in 1988, Leland served as President of the San Francisco School Board. He successfully championed smaller classrooms,
higher quality textbooks, and strict fiscal responsibility to ensure that all tax dollars were used appropriately. As a
San Francisco Supervisor, Leland continued to advocate for children, championing family day care and passing laws protecting
school kids from tobacco advertising.
