Assemblyman Yee has written and supported many laws to protect consumers against
unscrupulous business operators who seek to take advantage of Californians. Some of
this legislation includes:
• |
| Hospital Overcharges. Wrote legislation which will protect
patients from payment disputes between healthcare companies and hospital-based
physicians. Each year, thousands of patients with healthcare benefits receive
these surprise medical bills following hospital visits, which can run upwards
of $20,000 and come even after the hospital accepts the patient’s health insurance
|
• |
| Car Buyer’s Bill of Rights. Supported new law which requires
car dealers to offer a two-day cancellation option under which the buyer can return
the vehicle without cause
|
• |
| Predatory Towing. Wrote and passed law protecting consumers
from towers by requiring that the person requesting the removal of a vehicle be present
at the time of towing. In 2004, Congress passed a federal bill to allow national
implementation of Yee’s bill.
|
• |
| Tracking Stolen Merchandise. Proposed law that would create
an effective statewide electronic database and reporting system to help law enforcement
agencies to combat internet auction fraud and expedite the recovery of stolen property.
|
• |
| Ending Auto Parts Monopoly. To lower costs for drivers and
end the abuse by auto companies, Yee introduced legislation encouraging the use of
quality certified aftermarket crash parts and identifying specific internationally
accepted standards to be used by the State of California in determining certification
– helping the millions of consumers involved in motor vehicle crashes each year.
|
• |
| Health Standards at Nail Salons. Nationwide there has been
a dramatic rise in the complaints of persistent lesions and infections after visiting
nail salons. Yee’s bill, vetoed by Schwarzenegger, would have established minimum
safety standards for pedicure manicure equipment and ensure that such businesses have
procedures for the proper, safe, and sanitary operation of spa equipment.
